Join us for our new D&T networks, designed to bring teachers together to share effective practice and fresh ideas.

Hosted by Ed Charlwood, Head of D&T at Oasis, this session explores how to integrate CAD confidently into your D&T curriculum and why it matters for student outcomes.

CAD has moved from a specialist tool to a core design literacy.

Students now encounter digital design in industry placements, university degrees, and emerging careers across engineering, product design, architecture, and manufacturing.

However many D&T departments lack confidence in teaching it effectively.

This session unpacks why CAD matters — beyond making something onscreen — how to teach it pedagogically rather than just button-clicking, and how to overcome barriers like time, cost, expertise, and curriculum space.

You will:

• explore the value of CAD in D&T, including its role in designing with constraint and precision, bridging conceptual thinking and digital realisation, building careers and unlocking assessment opportunities

• consider practical teaching approaches, including scaffolding CAD skills, using CAD as a thinking tool, structuring progression from KS3 to KS5, and making it accessible in terms of time, cost and inclusion

• discover useful resources and tools, including free and low-cost platforms like Tinkercad, Onshape and Fusion Education

• hear real examples from classrooms, including common challenges and how schools are addressing them.

This training is suitable for D&T teachers at any level of CAD experience, as well as subject leaders planning implementation, or anyone looking to upskill. No prior CAD expertise is required.

Please note: A recording of the event will be available to attendees within three days of the event.

We will also be releasing a copy on our YouTube channel, accessible via the Professional Development Academy, later in the term.

This event counts as 1 hour of CPD.

You will receive a certificate via email after the event.
